由于: the formal cause

由于 (yóuyú) replaces 因为 in written or official contexts: reports, announcements, articles.

由于 + cause, ...

Due to weather conditions, the flight was cancelled.

因此 (yīncǐ) = 'that is why, consequently'. More formal than 所以, it often opens the second sentence.

..., 因此...

He works very hard, that is why he progresses quickly.

The price is too high, consequently we have decided not to buy.
