Why word-by-word pinyin changes everything

Google Translate gives you one solid block of characters: you can't tell where a word starts or how to pronounce it. HaHa Chinese splits the sentence into words, shows the toned pinyin under each one, and tags its HSK level. You understand the sentence instead of copying it.

And to actually learn?

Signed in, the app highlights the words at your level that you don't know yet. One tap captures them into your collection, and spaced repetition brings them back right before you forget. You can also read graded texts, follow the grammar lessons and ask the panda tutor anything.

Frequently asked questions

Is the translator really free?

Yes. Translation with pinyin is free and needs no account. A Google or Apple sign-in is only used to keep your word collection.

Is the pinyin reliable?

The pinyin is computed word by word with tone marks, taking context into account (characters with several readings such as 了, 还 or 行 are handled).

Can I translate from Chinese?

Yes, both directions. Chinese input is also segmented and annotated with pinyin.

What is a word's HSK level?

The HSK is the official Chinese proficiency test, in 6 levels. Every displayed word carries its level, so you can spot what to learn first.

Does it work on iPhone?

Yes: the HaHa Chinese app is on the App Store, and the site works in any browser.
